5 Natural Ways to Calm Your Child's Anxiety at Home

Child Anxiety

Being a kid can be tough. There are so many exciting things to learn and experience that it can sometimes feel overwhelming. It’s common for children to experience worries, and parents must teach them how to cope when it happens. What easier way than trying natural ways to calm your child’s anxiety at home?

1.   Become Educated

Parents have eyes in the back of their heads — it seems they see all and know all. Their top priority is to make sure their children feel loved, safe and supported. Having all the answers can be more complicated than it seems, especially if your child experiences anxiety.

It can be scary not to know how to help your child work through something. What may seem minuscule to you could be a boulder to them. Dismissing and diminishing their feelings could make situations worse.

Get on your child’s level and teach them how to process and tackle challenging situations when they seem too much to bear. Your kid may be experiencing an anxiety disorder. It’s important to talk with their doctor about options to help them manage their symptoms and get treatment.

2. Work With Health Care Providers

Many health care providers take extra care in making sure that the process is as stress-free as possible for their patients. You’ll want to be on the lookout for companies such as these if your child has anxiety. It is helpful to find doctors that go that extra mile to reassure your child when they are worried.

Pediatricians are not all as accommodating as they should be. There are many factors to consider when choosing what doctor is right for you and your child. The location is a good rule of thumb but is not always a deciding factor.

The doctor you choose might be worth the long commute to their office. Business hours and how friendly the staff is are other things to include in your decision. Make sure you think about all f these factors when choosing your child’s health care provider.

3. Ease Appointment Anxiety

Providers can ease your children’s anxiety before their appointment. Many kids are afraid to go to the doctor. Around 15%-20% of children encounter trauma at some point in their lives.

Only a select few companies exist that strive to reassure patients experiencing anxiety. It’s essential to look for these providers for your child to ensure they get the best possible care.

4. Reduce Concerns

Anxiety is scary for adults, so imagine what it must be like for children. They are in uncharted territory and are dependent on you for survival. Here are some tips you can utilize to ensure your child’s anxiety is kept to a minimumbefore and after their doctor appointments.

Talk Through It

Reinforce positive thinking. Kids are so receptive, and if they see you lifting yourself up or being positive in the face of negativity, they will most likely practice it as well. Remember that you are their role model and encourage them to open up and talk about what is bothering them so you can work through things together.

Exercise

Exercise is a natural remedy for anxiety in children. It distracts from negative or unhealthy thoughts and promotes a healthy lifestyle. There are so many ways to exercise that are fun for kids and reduce child anxiety at home. Buy your kids a hula hoop and have them try to get so many spins in record time. Get some children together to play a sport like baseball or soccer. Team building and social interaction are great ways for kids to reduce their stress levels as long as they don’t feel pressured to compete.

Relax

Relaxation can elicit a similar effect. When you’re constantly on the go, your body adjusts to that sort of fast-paced lifestyle. Sometimes, slowing down is exactly what you need, and the same goes for your child. It’s vital to set an example for self-care. Make sure your children get all the time they need to be kids and have fun. Encourage them to listen to their bodies and relax when they need to.

Face Fears

You must teach your kids not to shy away from anything that makes them afraid. Conquering your fears is so empowering. Your anxiety lessens and you will feel more at ease. It takes about 20-45 minutes for your body to reduce stress naturally.

5. Use Coping Strategies

Coping mechanisms can be a lifesaver to have when you need them. The power of positive thinking can help quiet those negative thoughts or avoid them altogether. Encourage your child to be kind to themself and promote positive affirmations. Learning how to recognize their strengths will help them build confidence as well.

There are so many options for calming down when you’re feeling anxious or upset. The key is finding what works best for you and your child.

Know Your Kid

Anxiety symptoms are sometimes unique to specific patients. Pay attention to your child’s traits and coping mechanisms. Something that works for other kids might not work for them, and it’s normal for you or your child to get frustrated and overwhelmed. Take the time you need to observe your child so you can better cater to their needs. Remember to be kind to yourself in the process. You’re doing great.
